5 Orange Lipsticks That Are Tempting Me To Try Leaving My Lip Color Comfort Zone
Bright colors and I have somewhat complex relationship. While red and I get along splendidly, just perusing Pinterest boards filled with gorgeous, creamy oranges and purples causes a long-repressed memory of mine to spring to the forefront of my mind.
This recollection is centered around an incident in which a certain MAC salesperson barked at me about skin undertones and veins before launching into a lecture about the importance of comprehending basic color theory. Traumatizing, let me tell you.
As I’ve gotten the tiniest bit older, my closet has become increasingly muted and conservative (read: a black and white filter makes no difference on any #OOTD shots of mine). I’m a sucker for black, blackest black and—on sunny days—perhaps pastel black.
And yet...there is a part of me that still clings to the delight that eight-year-old-me felt when wearing a wasabi-green tunic even though this was terrifically unflattering against my California-tanned skinned.
Did I care about the color mismatch? Nope.
And so, in the spirit of pursuing an aesthetic that screams, “I'm carefree, happy and only slightly ignorant of ‘BASIC COLOR THEORY'”, here are 5 orange lipsticks that I am very tempted to try, green or blue veins be damned.
Saigon Summer is a “frosted bright orange" and it is kind of like the good girl in the orange squad, the one that oozes respectability politics in an endearing way but is always just more than a few more temptations away from a wild night out. Don’t let the frosted component of this fool you, this one can get as bold as the wearer dares.
Chanel's "Rogue Allure Velvet Luminous Matte Lip Color in 43 La Favorite" is like Saigon Summer’s older, darker sister who has long legs and all the sophistication in the world. A coral-orange with a subtle, soft shine, La Favorite effortlessly floats between corporate high-rises and spring break in Cancun. So like, fun, but responsible…at least during the day.
The ride-or-die of the squad, a fiery, neon orange-red with warm undertones. A-Go-Go would kill when paired with a bright red liner and with its proverbial lasting power, could probably survive all the boardwalk treats (hot dogs! giant pretzels! frozen lemonade!) you want. Best served with giant sunglasses and French braids.
Oh and in case you needed to know, I am totally tempted to buy every shade from this lipstick line since everyone has been raving about it, including my fellow beauty editor Jamelia in Purple Lips Galore: 3 Gloriously Fantastic Shades I Am Currently Coveting.
A deliciously unpredictable world lies beyond this slippery slope, my friends. As if bright orange lips weren’t quite enough, a high-shine lip lacquer like Marc Jacobs Beauty's Forbidden Fruit absolutely radiates with iridescent flecks. This is that girl of the squad who talks too loudly and, we daresay, a bit too often, but she has a lot to say and after all, we’re just lucky enough to be within earshot, you know?
This lipstick and I have a lot in common. This lipstick spent all her free time in the library during college and was too busy being practical to notice that times were changing, and that her classic red was evolving to something a little more adult. Let’s just say that Atomic Orange, with its low-key electric depth, will never deviate from the tried and true path, but with her subtly sexy intrigue, you’ll definitely want to follow her around.
