Aloe Vera As A Makeup Primer: Confirmed Success
Not too long ago, Bree gave us her insight on using aloe vera as a makeup primer. I’d never heard of using aloe vera in this way. Growing up, my mom would put it on my skin a lot for sun damage, acne and scarring. Aloe vera is known for its multitude of healing and soothing properties, so after hearing about this potential new use, I knew I had to test it out for myself.
I have an aloe vera plant at home, so I just cut through the leaf, to get to the gel. If you don’t have a plant, you can buy one at any garden store. They’re easy to maintain and super useful. And of course, you can always get aloe gel from any drug or beauty store. Something that’s 100% aloe vera or has fewer chemicals would be more preferable.
I first put it on my skin for about 20 minutes before doing my makeup, then rinsed it off. I did notice a few immediate differences. My skin looked brighter and had a slightly more even tone. It felt really smooth and my makeup application felt very easy. Foundation and concealer just glided on flawlessly and had a bit of a more polished look! It also works well to mix aloe vera with honey or cucumber. I’ve also been applying a small bit of aloe vera gel right under my eyes upon waking up and washing my face. It helps reduce puffiness and my under eye circles! It’s actually a perfect substitute for your favorite eye cream!
I was also curious to see if I could use aloe vera in the place of a normal eyeshadow or foundation primer. So, before doing my makeup, I applied a very thin layer of aloe vera gel to my cheeks and my eyelids. I found that my makeup blended really well and had a nice, dewy look to it! And since aloe vera is kinda gooey, my makeup definitely lasted all day. Bonus—aloe vera does not cause creasing!
I initially had a bit of hyper-pigmentation, texture and a lot of sun damage (it’s been in the 100’s here!).
My skin definitely isn’t perfect still, but after a week and a half or so of using aloe vera as masks and primers, my skin tone is a lot more even, and my skin feels soft and smooth.
I definitely recommend picking up a bottle of aloe vera gel this summer! Stay cool!
