Brilliance: Maya Cosmetics' Javed Younis & Bilal Saeed
Needless to say, we had to find out more about this very innovative brand, which is why we chatted with Javed Younis (the president and co-founder) and Bilal Saeed (the vice president and co-founder).
The hues in your nail colors are just sublime. How do you typically choose them?
This is really a community effort; perhaps it's why the colors are so wonderful. We send out a survey to all our customers and get their thoughts on what should be added to our list of colors and—based on their input—we release colors accordingly.
We are suckers for fun names...and yours frequently boast unique, apt ones! Can you tell us a bit about the product naming process?
This was one of the funnest parts of the business. We had a loonnnng list with so many great names to choose from. In the end, we decided we needed something short, sweet, and universal. The name "Maya" is quite popular in the US (where MAYA is based), as well as in the Latino community and peoples of color.
Additionally, we found the term used across several languages, from Sanskrit to Urdu to Persian to Arabic, each with a positive meaning ranging from "princess" all the way to "water," the latter being particularly useful as all our polishes are water-permeable.
Why nail polish?
Everyone loves their nails. Nail polish accounts for one the largest segments in the consumer cosmetics market, yet it is filled with toxins and ill-sought ingredients many consumers are unaware of.
We wanted to provide a product that was a safe alternative to traditional nail polish, free of harmful ingredients and guilt-free.
The fact that your polishes are halal, 100% breathable, water permeable, vegan and cruelty-free is just marvelous. How exactly did you manage to achieve this feat?
It was quite a process. Before we went into production, we spent over a year getting certified and approved by the different regulatory bodies...but it was all worth it for that extra assurance we can provide our customers.
What is next for you?
We want to be a one-stop-shop-all, high-quality, health-conscious cosmetics brand. We look forward to expanding our product range into a full cosmetics wardrobe, where we can assist all consumers with all of their needs.
