DIY It: Pat McGrath Glitter Lips
The Pat McGrath Labs Lust 004 Lipstick Kit—which Shriya talked about in Glitter, Glitter Everywhere: Pat McGrath Lust 004 Kit recently caught my eye and I instantly fell in love with all of the glittery goodness.
I had my Sephora VIB Rogue early access and wallet all ready to go, but both luckily (for my wallet) and unfortunately (for my glitter-loving soul) I changed my mind last minute and decided not to purchase the lipstick kit at its somewhat intense $60 price tag. But I didn’t give up on my dream of wearing red ruby s(lip)pers on my face…See what I did there?
I had a few fails while trying to recreate the lipstick kit look, but I managed to get an end result that I was happy with.
The steps are really simple, but each is very important.
Step 1: Put on a light layer of lipstick and dab with a tissue or use a heavy application of a dry lip liner pencil. Using something too silky and moisturizing can be a problem with this process, because we don’t want the look to slip around more than necessary. I used a light layer of red lipstick.
Step 2: Put on the stickiest lip gloss that you can find. Again, silky and moisturizing don’t apply here. We want it as tacky and thick as possible, once you pile the glitter onto your lips the icky sticky feeling goes away.
Step 3: Pack the glitter on using a small flat brush and use a LOT of glitter to coat the brush. Once you push down on the layer of gloss the stickiness goes away and you won’t be able to apply more. Work from one corner of the mouth to the other, like shown in the picture. The small concealer brush from the Real Techniques Core Collection was perfection for doing this process. Sephora’s video tutorial for the lipstick kit showed the model using her finger to apply the glitter. Don’t bother trying that, it doesn’t create an even layer of glitter and you’ll have unflattering patches.
And that’s it, 3 simple steps to achieve gorgeous glitter lips! The best part about deciding to do this DIY was finding the glitter on Amazon. I can create glitter lips in 45 fun colors now, in addition to using the glitter for my eyes and nails. Here’s some fun I had with fuchsia, thanks to lots of glitter and Kat Von D Beauty Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in L.U.V.
Simple-looking or not, I definitely ate a lot of glitter getting this right, so I hope you enjoy the fruits of my labor!
