Mother Knows Best: Beauty Edition
Last year. Mariana talked about the source of her beauty obsession (spoiler alert: it was her mother) in honor of Mother's Day. This year, we are exploring our moms (and mother figures') favorite beauty buys.
"My mother shaped many of my beliefs about skincare, makeup and other beauty matters. She also stuck to the same products more often than not...which I know a little something about.
Her go-tos include Olay Moisturizer, Lancôme's Le Stylo Waterproof Long Lasting Eyeliner and John Frieda® Frizz Ease® Serum. I watched her apply Maybelline's Great Lash Mascara on a near-daily basis, so I think that this also qualifies as a 'forever' pick, right?"
Growing up, I always remember running into my mom's room while she was getting ready for her day and spotting her go-to beauty items throughout the years. She had a couple staple items she always stuck to when I was growing up...and still continues to use most of these!
One of the products she has used for as long as I can remember is a simple facial cleanser by CLEAN & CLEAR®. This foaming facial cleanser has a special place in my heart. Not only does the smell remind me of my amazing mom, but the product itself is great. It is the perfect simple face wash, perfect for removing makeup, dirt, oil, etc.
Another go-to of hers is L’oreal Paris' Voluminous Carbon Black Volume Building Mascara. The brush leaves your lashes long and clump-free. This tube of mascara brings back so many memories. I remember being a little girl getting ready for dance recitals while my mom applied this exact mascara to my lashes!
Lastly, we have NEUTROGENA® Body Oil. I remember my mother engraving into my brain to always apply lotion or oil after the shower. And that is exactly what she uses this product for, it’s no wonder why she has perfect skin! This oil is great for everyday use as it smells delicious and works very well to keep skin moisturized and shiny.
These three products have been with my mom since day one. They have been nothing but great to her, just as she has been with me!
"My grandmother's 3 essential beauty items are total necessities in my book too. To be nice and smooth, she always recommends a pumice stone and she loves the Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Body Lotion. She also recommends having a good magnifying mirror. We both have and love this Cordless Dual-Sided LED Lighted Round Vanity Mirror from Zadro. A little on the pricey side, but worth every penny for beauty lovers!"
"I’ve tried one too many under-eye creams in my search of a forever youthful look and it seems this particular area of my face is a bit extra sensitive because they’ve all given me some sort of allergic reaction. But one day came my superhero mom, holding a small jar of what I later learned was Clinique's Repairwear Anti-Gravity™ Eye Cream and promising that this one would work for me as it did for her.
And it did! This one caused no skin issues and it left my under-eye area feeling firm and soft.
The only problem? Clinique isn’t cruelty-free, and as some of you may know, I am no longer about that animal testing life. I’m choosing to go with my morals here, though it might hurt. But my mom still swears by it, and at the end of the day, she really wasn’t wrong. No surprises there!"
"The traditional image of Chinese beauty is a woman with bright red cherry lips that contrasts against her pale skin, raven black hair and decorated flushed cheeks. Although I rarely saw my mother wear makeup, the image of her soft red lips comes to mind when I think about the occasions when she did.
As embarrassing as this is, it was well into my college years until I finally had the courage to wear such a daring color out! I felt like the red was so bold and striking that I didn’t have the moxy to pull it off like my mother did. The lipstick that comes to mind is MAC Matte Lipstick in Russian Red. It’s a glamorously classical blue-red, the kind that old school Hollywood glamour is made of."
Happy Mother's Day!
