My Top 3 Favorite Quotes About Beauty
It probably goes without saying at this point, but I am really into beauty. So it is only natural that I also obsessively hoard beauty quotes, right? That's what I tell myself at least.
Here are my top three, in no particular order.
1. “Lift your lashes because you need to lift yourself. Don’t fall into the trap of self-pity.”– Bubzbeauty in “Makeup for Heartache”
In this YouTube video, Lindy Tsang finds a way to turn every step of makeup into some greater metaphor for life and heartache. I like this quote because it makes me think of how manual lifting our lashes really is. This quote reminds me how much control we have over ourselves; it reminds me that the mind is a powerful thing and it gives us the power to lift ourselves. I know making yourself think or feel a certain way is definitely not like curling your lashes, but maybe it’s not as different as we think it is.
2. “Nothing is quite beautiful alone: nothing but is beautiful in the whole.”– Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nature
I’ve come to realize how my definition of beauty has changed. When I searched “Beauty” in Google images, I got only headshots of women wearing nice makeup. But I think that prettily painted, conventionally-attractive ladies is my definition of beauty at all. As Emerson reminds us, beauty is a holistic feature; something is beautiful when it is part of something else beautiful. I chose this quote because it reminds me that beauty isn’t achieved through the products in today’s “beauty” industry. Perhaps it’s not that makeup makes us beautiful, but rather that we make makeup beautiful.
3. “If everybody’s not a beauty, then nobody is.”–Andy Warhol
Warhol said this line when asked about his potential movie title, The Beauties. He ended up not using this title since he would have to define one person as a beauty and the other as not. Because, at the end of the day, who has the authority to say something is beautiful and something else isn’t? In that sense, beauty is everywhere and in everything.
