Why Philosophy's Purity Made Simple One-Step Facial Cleanser Is Still My Go-To
I was not always the seasoned beauty expert you see before you.
In fact, for most of my life I didn’t wear any makeup or focus on skincare at all. Not out of any kind of moral stance, but just because I had absolutely no idea how any of it worked.
I loved fashion, but once you figure out how to dress yourself around age 4, the danger of walking down the street with your clothing on wrong is minimal. Not so with makeup.
When I walked by Sephora, it had an air of magic about it, filled with products whose uses were shrouded in mystery.
So one day, home on summer break from college, I decided to venture in and ask a salesperson what I needed to start my beauty adventure. He surveyed my bare face and asked, “What’s your skincare routine?”
“Uh...I don’t have one.”
“How do you clean your face? Do you moisturize? Use sunscreen?”
“I shower every day. I use soap. And sunscreen when I go to the beach.”
He shuddered with horror and ushered me to the back of the store. The very first product he handed to me was a small bottle of a creamy liquid. Philosophy's Purity Made Simple. An all-purpose cleanser.
“Use this to wash your face", he instructed. I dutifully took the bottle and put it in my little black shopping basket.
The salesperson took me under his wing that day. I spent a fortune on what he called “the essentials.” Two makeup brushes, a Smashbox eyeshadow trio, a Tarte blush, a moisturizer/sunscreen. And the Philosophy cleanser.
Six years, a whole lot of experimentation and many more trips to Sephora later, exactly one of those items is still on my list of holy grails. My beloved Philosophy cleanser.
I’ve tried plenty of others. These days, I’m a devotee of Korean skincare and my nightly regimen is up to 7 steps. I’ve tried double cleansing, oil cleansing and face washes galore. Every time I can feel my skin afterwards—too tight or sometimes simply irritated.
My face is super sensitive and easily dried out. The only cleanser I have found that is gentle enough. And it doesn’t strip the moisture from my face.
My first love. A true love. And my forever go-to.
