Really Remarkable: Nubian Skin's Ade Hassan
Ade Hassan is the remarkable—and extremely business-savvy—woman behind Nubian Skin, an innovative company that creates skin-tone lingerie, hosiery and shoes for women of color.
While this doesn't fall into our typical "focus area", we couldn't help but be intrigued by this extraordinarily entrepreneur...and we were therefore super excited to be able to chat with her!
Tell us about the exact moment when you decided that you were going to bring "a different type of nude" to the world?
I had been thinking a lot about starting a business in fashion and I couldn’t quite figure it out. One afternoon in May 2011, I was sitting at my desk, on a project I wasn’t particularly enjoying, when the idea popped into my head. I remember sending a friend a text saying, “I figured out what I want to do when I grow up.”
How did you decide upon the name "Nubian Skin"?
I wanted something which really spoke to the history and significance of dark skin, so I chose Nubian. I had originally thought of Nubian Nude, but that can be very tricky when it comes to internet searches...‘Skin’ just worked.
What has been the number one obstacle in your business journey thus far?
The biggest hurdle to overcome at the start was finding a good quality manufacturer. As a new and small business, a lot of manufacturers simply didn’t respond to queries and others were looking for incredibly high volumes, so it was tricky. Once you actually secure a manufacturer, it’s always a battle to manage expectations.
When do you feel your most beautiful?
On a day-to-day basis, usually when I’m just out the shower; it’s such a nice feeling being freshly showered and my skin looks fresh and alert. In general, when I’m in Nigeria, my skin just loves the heat and humidity.
On a much less serious note, what is your favorite hair, makeup or skin product of all time?
Pretty much any Lancôme mascara. They are excellent.
