The Basics Of Manic Panic + A Step-By-Step Dye Guide

The Basics Of Manic Panic + A Step-By-Step Dye Guide

We’ve all seen those amazing colored hair masterpieces on Instagram that are basically locks of art (peep some of the lovelierie team's favorites by surfing the #lovelieriehalloffame hashtag) and it is only a matter of time before one becomes inspired enough to take the crazy color plunge, right?

Well, I did (yet again), so sit back and enjoy this overview of basics for applying Manic Panic hair color. It's also sort of a step-by-step guide?

Step 1: Gather The Supplies

What you need: Manic Panic High Voltage® Classic Cream Formula Hair Color in Electric Lizard™ and Venus Envy®, a tint brush, a mixing bowl, tin foil, rubber gloves, a towel to protect the floor, paper towels, an old shirt to wear and Vaseline® Jelly/Aquaphor/a thick lotion of your choosing.

Get all of these and then move on to the next step.

Step 2: Lighten Hair (If Needed)

Manic Panic has a Flash Lightning® Bleach Kit that lots of people are really into.

Follow the exact directions on this box if you need to lighten your hair before applying your chosen color. You can lighten it as little or as much as you want. The lighter your hair is, the more vibrant the color will show up.  But, if you choose to only lighten it a tad, you’ll still get some super sick highlights.

Step 3: Protect The Scene

Make sure you’ve taken the necessary precautions if you’ve never used Manic Panic before.  For me, this includes covering my floor with a towel, putting on an old semi-disposable shirt and putting down some paper towels on my countertops. Trust me, just as it will stain your hair, this dye will stain your bathroom.

Step 4: Set Up

Apply a thick layer or lotion around your hairline, ears and neck so that you don't end up with odd color blotches. Then separate your hair into manageable sections. It will be way better if you don't skip this step. Then put your hair color into your mixing bowl and have your brush ready. AND WEAR GLOVES.

Step 5: Art Class Is Now In Session!

Okay, this is the super fun part! Take your brush and dip it in the hair dye. Starting at the ends of your hair, brush on the color and work your way up. Don’t go all the way to your roots (stopping about ¼” away) to make sure you don’t end up dying your scalp.  Run your fingers through the section once you’ve applied until it gets a little bit foamy.

Step 6: (Optional) Wrap Each Section Of Your Hair Up With Tin Foil

You don't have to do this but I highly recommend that you do. It doesn't have to be fancy, just fold the foil over your hair and scrunch the foil up.

Step 7: WAIT

Be a zen master and sit around and twiddle your thumbs. I left my dye in for around an hour and attempted to speed the process along by using a hair dryer.

Step 8: Rinse!

Rinse out your hair with super ice cold water. Chilly and unpleasant, yes, but doing so really helps lock in color in my experience. Continue to rinse until the water runs clear. Now, the jury is still out on whether or not to shampoo at this point, but I always do since otherwise I end up with color smeared all over my neck and clothes. It will dull your hair color a tad though.

Step 9: Blow Dry & Enjoy!

Just like it sounds. Oh and here is how my semi-subtle green tipped hair ended up, in case you were curious.

Also, Electric Lizard™ is black light reactive. See?
