The Duochromatic Man: Spencer Claus
Spencer Claus is a makeup aficionado—and Instagrammer—who creates striking, intricate looks on an impressively regular basis.
Obviously, we had to pick his brain to find out more about him.
Makeup is for everyone, but far too many people seem to be resistant to the idea of men rocking a face full of cosmetics. Why do you think this is the case?
I mean, there's a lot of history as to why people seem resistant to men or male-presenting people wearing makeup. About a century and a half ago, gender roles started to drift towards opposite ends of the spectrum. It came with the jobs of men and women becoming more separate.
Recently, things have started to go back to the way they were so more people are becoming comfortable with it, even though it's still not where it should be. Because of this shift towards a binary state of mind, makeup is still considered exclusively feminine by many people. If a man doesn't want to appear feminine...that kind of rules out makeup. I think it's just a matter of people being comfortable with a guy - or someone who typically presents as a guy - expressing femininity.
What caused you to first fall in love with all things beauty?
Oh gosh, I don't know! I started out doing makeup in theatre, but I think the best part of it all was the fact that makeup could absolutely transform the way someone looked. It changed the way others saw them. I still think that's magical.
You have such a knack for creating whimsical, hyper-dramatic looks. Where do you get your inspiration from?
I get it from just about anything I can! I pull a lot from pieces of artwork, album covers, nature. I love editorial looks - ask any of my makeup friends if I've told them "you should do an editorial look." They'll say yes.
What is the best makeup-related compliment that you have ever received?
I love what you just told me! "Whimsical" and "hyper-dramatic." Those are pretty awesome. I love when people say nice things about my lips or my contouring, but anything that isn't mean is good with me!
