The Super Skincare Sage: Shelley Costantini
We were delighted beyond words to recently chat with Shelley Costantini, who is one-half of the duo behind S4 Skincare. The woman is a force to be reckoned with; plus, she is kind of a skincare genius.
We love the significance behind the name "S4 Skincare"! How did you dream it up?
Shanna and I spent hours writing down everything we wanted in a product. Smart, Simple, Safe and Successful kept popping up as essential elements to our line. The 4 S’s demonstrate the energy, thought and research that went into selecting safe, healthy and effective ingredients and packaging. We interviewed countless people to find out which important factors they wanted in a product line.
Being an Esthetician, I have the unique ability to use our products on my clients’ skin daily. Together, we try out various versions of each product as they come out of the lab and ask questions in real time. We chose the word Successful to represent the success my clients have experienced when using our products.
Last but not least, words that begin with the letter “S” are so much fun. And our names are Shanna and Shelley!
Bit of an odd question, but what is your number one skincare issue and how do you handle it like a champion?
My skin issue is wrinkle prevention! Growing up, I spent many summers running around beaches and sitting poolside slathering my skin with tan-enhancing oil. Oh my gosh, if I had only known better! Once I became an Esthetician, I realized the error of my ways and am spending my adult life trying to repair the past and prevent future damage.
My champion product is the recently-launched Replenished Mask which is freshly-prepared and contains plant stem cells and loads of lactic acid. The mask is my go-to product when I see a wrinkle creeping up!
Do you have a day-to-day mental mantra that you try to stick to?
Every morning I wake up and say, “I am more than I appear to be, all the world's strength and power rests inside me.” A dear friend told me about this quote from Robin Sharma and I love it. It makes me smile whether I’m having a good day or a tough one.
Tell us about your favorite makeup look of all time.
Kevyn Aucoin has always been my favorite makeup artist. In his book Face Forward he transformed Julia Roberts into a movie character from the 60’s. He used whitish-beige powder eyeshadow with black liquid liner and a full set of lashes. For her lips, he used light flesh-pink tones and dusted soft pink blush on her cheeks. It’s simple, yet stunning. Looking back at the image, I realize now that it reminds me of how my mother wore her makeup back in the day.
