The Transformation Master: Annelies van Overbeek
Annelies van Overbeek uses makeup, clothes and accessories to transform herself into an array of real and fictional women and posts the impressive results on her Instagram.
Her efforts have recently caught the attention of, well, the entire beauty world and she is becoming more famous for her talent by the day.
We wanted to know more about this budding beauty master so we asked her a few questions. And it turns out that this 17-year-old is as graceful and charming as many of the people she emulates.
Recreating iconic looks from iconic women is a pretty unexpected hobby. What inspired you to start doing this?
For as long as I can remember, I've always enjoyed using makeup, hair and clothes to dress as other people or characters from films, series etc. But I started recreating these iconic vintage looks not too long ago, because I only fairly recently got into vintage.
It started about a year ago when I decided to cut my hair into a pixie cut, because people immediately started comparing me to Audrey Hepburn. As I said, I wasn't very familiar with her or old Hollywood in general, but the more I looked into it, the more inspired I became.
Which look has been the most challenging (to achieve) so far?
Probably Sherilyn Fenn as 'Audrey Horne' in 'Twin Peaks', because of the eyebrows. That's the only look for which I've had to use face tape so far. There's no way I could've achieved that arch otherwise!
How do you pick who you want to emulate next?
I don't really have a specific way of choosing someone. But there are a two things that are necessary for me to achieve a good result:
1. The person or character must look at least a little bit similar to me, because although makeup, hair and clothes can do a lot, it's not going to work if you have a completely different face.
2. The look should not be too expensive for me to recreate.
Any upcoming looks in particular that we should keep an eye out for?
Yes! Amelie Poulain, Mathilda from 'Leon, the professional' and Ava Gardner are all on my to-do list.
You have some seriously aspirational eyebrows! Tell us about your brow maintenance routine.
I have incredibly thick, long and black eyebrows. They used to be quite arched, but after a fall from the stairs there was a huge cut on one end of my eyebrow, which forced me to pluck the ends to make them a similar shape again, so they are quite straight now.
Since my eyebrow hairs are very long, I can pretty much brush them into any shape I want. Having such bushy eyebrows can be quite a chore though, because the hairs grow back so fast that I have to pluck them almost every day!
