The Weirdest Beauty Myth I Have Ever Heard (And Believed)
Beauty myths are like designer knock-offs: they look good, but they’re not at all what they’re cracked up to be. I think there needs to be an episode of Mythbusters covering old wives tales of the beauty world, something to confirm whether what we hear all the time is fact or fiction (Editor’s Note: The Beauty Brains is a stellar podcast that debunks and discusses beauty claims and myths and everyone should totally check it out).
Luckily for you though, I can confirm that at least one beauty myth isn’t all that it promises: “treating your hair with olive oil makes it grow faster”.
In the spirit of April Fools' Day, I will tell you all about how I made this discovery. Basically, I put this to the test.
Granted, I was young and uniformed and it seemed like a good, harmless idea at the time. It wasn’t though.
I had cut my hair and it was growing back far slower than I would have liked.
So, I decided that it was time to put this particular maxim to the test. I tried it out for a week, bathing my hair in olive oil every time I showered. As it turned out, the olive oil just made my hair greasy, not long or luscious.**Disclaimer: my hair tends to be more oily** Furthermore, to my chagrin, my hair didn’t grow. At all.
I did some research into this myth (after my week as the walking embodiment of the musical Grease) to discover the reason why it might appear to some that their hair is growing faster than normal.
While this natural oil actually DOES strengthen and moisturize your hair strands (which may lead to less breakage overall), the oil itself doesn’t change how fast your hair follicles grows. So, if you do decide to try this as an all-natural moisturizing treatment, make sure that you rinse ALL of the oil out and perhaps keep plenty of dry shampoo around.
Nobody wants to walk around looking like they haven’t showered in two weeks, right? So ensure that you don't look like a walking, slimy mess by picking up a salon-approved deep conditioner and shine spray instead of dumping oil olive all over your head. This will achieve the same results without any residual hair slickness.
Happy April Fools' Day and keep an eye out for tricks and pranks, beauty-related or not!
