Why I Like Makeup

Why I Like Makeup

We go through life with what feels like thirty thousand things to do in a day. There are never enough hours to sleep, eat, work, hit the gym, spend time with your friends, go to school—the list goes on and on. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and stressed out. You can’t stop thinking about what’s next so and you start to feel anxious and worried about all of it. This is why we all need an outlet. We need something that we can do for ourselves that allows us to relax. Something you can do so to all yourself to refocus so that you can tackle all the things you need to get done at your very best.

For me, that outlet is makeup.

People always assume that makeup is about vanity and that it’s a tool so that others find you more attractive. This isn’t completely wrong. Makeup makes me feel more beautiful, more confident. Bold lipstick allows me to say bold words. Sharp wings and big lashes give me the confidence to look someone directly in the eyes. Groomed eyebrows inspire me to feel more expressive. But that isn’t everything that makeup is in my life.

If my mind starts to go into that downward spiral, thinking about how there aren’t enough hours in the day to get it all done, I think about makeup. When I lay awake at night and my mind can’t stop thinking about all the things that need to get done before next Tuesday, I imagine my dream beauty room.

And at first, I may feel guilty. I find myself thinking about how I don’t have time to be contemplating about these things because I have so much that needs to get done. But it all honesty, if I didn’t take these breaks and allow myself to relax and be creative in some way, I would be doing the things I need to get done slower.

When that guilt comes crawling in, I remind myself that makeup rejuvenates me and gives me the energy I need in a day to tackle everything I need to do. And it’s important to have that in your life. The thing is, life isn’t meant to be a constant struggle. It’s about having fun while getting to where you want to be.

Allow yourself to relax and have fun while doing your makeup. It’s not meant to be another chore on your list of things to do today. It’s about expressing yourself and getting your mind ready to tackle all that is coming your way.

Express your thoughts about makeup (or whatever else you have on your mind) via Twitter and I will metaphorically meet you there with lipsticks in hand.
