Your Definitive Guide To Achieving Next-Level Red Lips
My makeup obsession began 9 years ago when I first discovered the vintage, super-glamtastic, pin-up style online.
I had dabbled with lip gloss and the occasional over the top, brightly colored, sparkly eyeshadow by this point (don’t judge, I know you had some too), but this was my first look at timeless glamour.
Since then, I have dedicated long hours, days, maybe even months to perfecting red lips, flawless-looking skin and black winged eyeliner.
Allow me to save you some time and effort by telling you what I’ve learned…
Layers Upon Layers
The first—and most important—rule of ultra-glam red lips is to use layers upon layers of red lip products to ensure that your masterpiece lasts all day long.
Start with a red lip stain, that way if your lipstick/liner situation fades throughout the day, you will have a red base underneath that shows through.
Next will be a lip liner, which will be used to both line and fill in the lips. This is the most essential product to this routine because it will determine the staying power of your masterpiece. The liner also prevents lip products from seeping out on to the rest of your face.
You can finish off with any red lipstick of your choice and a little gloss on the very center. The gloss will definitely affect the staying power, so use at your own risk.
Just like you would contour your face, you can also use different shades of red lip products to define and accentuate your lips.
Consider using a slightly darker lip liner on the outer edges of your lips and a more vivid color right in the center. This will give you a sexy-pouty red lip that really stands out.
And if you really want to get super shady with your red-lip game, make sure to throw on a big pair of dark sunglasses to increase the glam factor by a million points.
Cleaning It Up
If you’re not the best with accurately lining your lip shape, no worries! Fill them in the best that you can and use this quick tip to erase any boo-boos.
Take one side of a Q-tip and some makeup remover and dab this over any red that may have escaped.
Then, take your everyday concealer and a small brush (an angled “eyeliner” brush works best) and line around the edge of your lip color. Once you’re done, take the side of the Q-tip without makeup remover and buff the concealer into the skin.
